Foreign Language Class

Bienvenidos a la clase de lenguas extranjeras

Hola a todos y bienvenidos a la página web de la clase de lenguas extranjeras, español para ser más claros. Hello to everyone and welcome to the Foreign Language website.

My name is Sergio Meza Padilla and I am a native of Colombia, in South America. I grew up in a city called Cartagena and my study background goes from journalism to a master degree in education, though I am currently pursuing a new master degree in applied linguistics to teach Spanish as a foreign language. It's been a while since I decided to become a teacher and I'm loving it!

I'd like to ask you this simple question as you peruse this section of the school website: why is it Spanish so important nowadays in a country like ours?  Well, Spanish is the second most common language in the United States, and is spoken by over 12% of the population. Furthermore, the United States holds the world's fifth largest Spanish-speaking population, outnumbered only by Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and Colombia which are Spanish-speaking countries. This fact means that Spanish is very important and it's part of this country.

We live in a country where cultural diversity is huge, so acquiring a second language is a "must". When I asked my classes why they think is important to acquire a second language, mostly everyone responds the same way: because you can communicate with people from other countries and cultures and is communication a key factor in foreign language teaching nowadays.

I believe at some point in life, my students will encounter the chance to speak the language with someone in this country or out of it. I hope you find this website appealing and helpful. You will find links to the different Spanish levels (I, II, III and IV) just click on the right one if you'd like to know what's going on in class. I will commit myself to update this website on a regular basis.
